RELIEF OF DISTRESS
SELF-HELP AT SEATOUN
A progress meeting was held at Seatoun on Wednesday last of- those working on the self-help basis, the Rev. A. A. Armstrong presiding. The committee reported that over 1400 hours of voluntary unpaid work has been given. As a result to date the ■; workers have had free firewood, have ianded supplies to many families in distress, have accumulated a stock for future distribution, and by sales of surpluses have added about £8 to the local relief fund. One allotment planted now shows vegetables in good growth. Other allotments are in preparation. 'During August over £17 was handed to the committee from entertainments locally organised. A large quantity of potato seed was sent from Levin by a gentleman interested iv self-help ideas. To all the above, anil to various city firms and local residents, the committee expresses sincere tlianks for their substantial donations and personal as.sistance in furthering the scheme. FOR WORKLESS WOMEN. A bureau for the registration of unemployed women and girls has been opened in Willis street, opposite the Hotel St. George. This office will bo conducted by the women's committee recently formed by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and its work will not conflict with the ' organisation . already established by. the YWV.C.A. All workless women are invited to apply at the new office, and arrangements have been made for close contact with sources of employment.
