In the match "possibles" were scored by both the captains, Messrs. M'Baln and Haasc. In the club shooting, the weekly "A" trophy goes to Haase with a tine "possible," while Mrs. Staples secured the "B" weekly tropliv with 6!) off the gun. LOWER HUTT LADIES' CLUB. It was a "novelty race night" at the range on Thursday, when three famous horses mot to contest the "Rlverbank Steeples," of eight hurdles, the first "hurdle" being optional. The runners were "Phar Lap" (C. Chlng), 'Gloaming" (H. Keanc). and "Limerick" (C. Lambert). In their preliminary, which was run on the coconut matting, the "horses" kicked out freely, and looked in great fettle, "Limerick" setting a fast pace. The betting was even, till the close of the "tote." Soon after the starting bell had sounded, and just as he had crossed the second "hurdle," "Phar Lap" was heard to remark that someone had "shifted his blinkers," so a restart was ordered. Once again Starter Hex Donkln sent them to tho "tape," and tho cry of "They're Off!" was accompanied by great cheering from the stand. As each horse safely negotiated successive "hurdles," practically nose to nose, excitement ran high. 'Thar Lap" and "Limerick" seemed to "knock" at the last "fence," but "Gloaming" took it in great style, to win by a whisker from "Limerick." "Phar Lap" was a close third. There was a great rush to the "tote" to collect tho dividend. Mr. Lambert, on behalf of the club, presented 11. Keene with a handsomo "trophy" for his meritorious victory. Later Messrs. Cliing, Keene, and Lambert each selected two ladies and formed three teams, of three, to fire a seven-shot match. At the end points. The three gentlemen fired a shoot-off of three shots each, securing three hulls, and the match was decided by cutting tho cards. Mr. Keene with his two ladies, Mesdames Donkin and Murray, were the winners. The Ladies' Committee have arranged a "five hundred" evening on Thursday; friends and supporters are cordially invited. This takes the place of the afternoon card parties. It is hoped to run these evenings on alternate weeks till tho end of the season. PUBLIC SERVICE CLUB. The following arc the leading ten in the club championship after completion of the second quarter: Slarte 11S0, Nicholson 1179, Poutawera 3178. Gibson 1101), Craig 11CS, Hendry 1101, Croxtnn 1161, Mrs. Potts 1101, Hlgginsou 1157, Clark 11 r.6. It. Sladc won the quarterly Gun Seme Cup, with W. A. Nicholson runner-up. At tho end of the second Quarter there are 23 ten-shot posslhlos in club and 11 possibles in ihler-ciub competitions. The G team successfully defended its premiership in the C Grade competition. In the shoot-off for a trophy for the winner of the ladles' match In the New Zealand championships Mrs. Potts was extremely unfortunate in shooting a club competition shoot first and registering a sterling 10-shot possible, gaining only 9G in the shoot-off. The ladies' team, which dead-heated for first place in the ladies' team championships, entertained members to supper. Among those presented with forks were Messrs. Potts, Poutawera. and Pitt, tho secretary using the tinopener. The ■ lnrer-Dopnrtmont competition will be Orcd next Thursday and Yriday.
