ROUGH IN THE NORTH
SNOW AT ROTORUA

-" AUCKLAND, 6th September. Very boisterous weather prevailed at Auckland on Saturday, with a northerly wind, which in "the early morning changed to a south-westerly, and was accompanied by, continuous rain until this afternoon, when conditions impioved. .
The barometer dropped sharply between midnight on Friday and midnight on Saturday, to 29.01 in, and then rose immediately. The rainfall for Saturday was .42in, and on Sunday .20in. The most severe snowstorm experienced for many years swept across Botorua ana Taupo districts during the week-end, covering the ground in some places to a. depth of three feet. The Taupo-Napier road was' completely blocked,' while access to Botorua by other routes was made exceedingly difficult. ■
One of the oldest residents of Rotorua says that there has not been a similar fall for fourteen years. Mount Tarawera is completely covered to the edge of the lake, and the snow on the Taupo road -was nearly a foot deep. On the other side of'Rotorua, Mount Ngongotaha was covered with snow to the foothills. v
Service car drivers between Rotorua ana Hamilton report a blizzard on the Mamaku hills. According to ono driver, visibility was reduced to about 20 yards, snow falling thickly; While trying to reach Napier early this morning, one motor-car sttuck a snowdrift on the Rangitaiki Plains, and was overturned. None of the occupants was hurt. ■
