The New Zealand cricketers commenced a match against an England Eleven here to-day. The weather was wintry, and the wicket appeared dead, but actually tho ball kicked appreciably. The teams were as follows: Now Zealand: AUcott, Weir, Mills Vivian, Lowry, Dempster, Page, Merritt, Cromb, Talbot, Blunt. England: Chapman, Hammond, Tennyson, Woolley, Ames, Pataudi Owen-Smith, Lowndes, Calthorpe Alloin, and Freeman. Lowry won the toss and batted. England's opening bowlers were AUom and Hammond. The latter was immediately dangerous,.the ball swinging and kicking disconcertingly. Dempster was caught in the slips off ono of his gloves. Mills made a miss-hit in attempting to hook a short ball. Blunt was caught by the wicket-keeper, and Weir in the slips. Four Wickets had been lost for 25 runs. Vivian and Talbot offered resistance for a period, then Freeman struck a, dangerous spell and bowled Vivian ana Lowry with successive balls before lunch. He beat Talbot with a googly after lunch. A valuable partnership followed. Page and Merritt scored brightly, and added 54 for the eighth wicket. Both were dismissed by catches in the slips. Page played a' sterling innings of the highest value. Rain, caused an adjournment at the close of the innings. England batted for. 70 minutes. Cromb again succeeded in capturing Hammond's wicket. Lowry handled the bowling admirably. Woolley was caught by AUcott at mid-on, off Merrittj Tennyson was <?aught behind; and Pataudi went out to a fine catch in the slips in the final over, of the.day.
