AWAPUNI NOTES
SKYRIDER SUFFERS FALL
king; colossus; -in work
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") I'ALMBRSTON N., This Day. The tracks at Awapnni were in good order for training operations on Saturday morning, the light rain having made'little impression. A track in the centre of the course proper w»e available for fast workers. Royal Black had Seneschal as a partner over seven furlongs. They- began slowly, and, timed from the six-furlong post, came home in Imin Ssscc. Royal Black will compete in the Balgownie Hack Handicap at Wanganui, and this'will be his first public appearance since joining L. Knapp's stable. " • : Brown Abbey,, who has) been displaying a tendency to stop, was well clear of Sw if tray after running from the five to the three-furlong post, but he was only a neck in front at the post after running the last three-furlongs ini39see. Keddar and Pahu covered seven furlongs in Imin 36 2-ssec, finishing on terms While Pahu and Gleu Kossie have declined their first day's engagements at Wanganui, they will in all probability be found in on .the second day. ■> - Park Acre and a Star Stream mare from W. Bailey's stable ran the last three furlongs of a five-furlong task in 41 2-ssec. Paik Acre will essay the Novice Stakes at Masterton.-. . ■ . ' Thrasher, .-who;'look's well, ran home from the half-mile post in ' 5i 2-ssec. He will make hid next appearance at Masterton. .-; . " ' • '■■ Gran Chaco, who has always shown pace,, led Top Flier at the end of three furlongs, the. distance being negotiated in the smart time of SSsec; Red Fuchsia and Warzone were together with Spearopa a length buck at^the conclusion of a five-furlongs' task on the plough—the only gallop thereon. Without being pressed they ran the distance in Imin 7sec. GETS IN TOO CLOSE. Skyrider (It. C. 3ililcs) was stout a couple of rounds over the big fences but on approachiug the first of the brush double on the . second time round she attempted to put in a 'short stride, but found herself in too close, and struck hard in front to knock the fence fiat and come heavily to earth. Fortunately her pdot was thrown clear, although he received a nasty shaking. While she lost a little skin off oue knee, the Day Comet mare appeared to be little the worse and the mishap should not interrupt her trainin?. •' ' ■ • ' • Mister Gamp (Miles)', the stable companion of Skyrider, was sent over the hurdle fences to give a very satisfactory display, the Bronzetti. gelding putting plenty, of heart into his work. This) gallop was carried out by Miles'prior to his mishap. ......... Mount Shannon and Gambler were sent round the hurdle fences in company. While they have still a lot to learn, they are both displaying improvement. Llandudno, who was to have been taken through to the Kgmont fixture, displayed a distaste to travelling in the float, and ho had to be loft behind. The old fellow will now take on the hurdle com-
lEany at Wangmmi. On Saturday he was restricted to solid puco -work 011 the plough. GENERAL TOPICS. G. X 7, New has King Colossus and Haulbowline back iv the active ranks, ajjd both have built up during their spellk While possibly still a shade on the small side, Haulbowliiie has grown very compact. The Mirror, a very promising youngster in G. W. New's stable, was given a run along with Trojan Melody over three furlongs to make quite a creditable showing against his more experienced companion. While Merry Damon, Merry Melody, and Callamart have been allowed to drop out at Wanganui, they have not suffered any as the result of their trip to Haweia. It was hardly probable that the circular course at Wauganui would have smited Merry Damon. Whereas Moutoa Treasury will go tlirough with her engagements at Wanganui, her stable companion, Trime Moutoa, has dropped out. .This Shambles representative i*< a big sort, and track conditions would not have bceu to his! liking in all probability. The local apprentice/-W. J. M'Dowell, is still an inmate of the Hawera Hospital as the i-esiilt of the fall he experienced at the Ugmont Meeting. He is, however, reported to be doing well, and it is hoped that he will be back in the saddle at Wanganui, in which case he will have the ride on Mouloa Treasury in the Empire Handicap. j Pangolin, who was-.given his. first outing since his-.return to Awapuni at the Egmont. Meeting, has been physicked, so the chestnut will be : an absentee for a day or two at least. . . Valueless has gone.' home to his owner in the' Waikato. While he ran disappointingly at Marton, he had been cording ;good efforts in his-track essays. The Valkyrian gelding should develop into a useful horse next season, for E. W. Watson had effected a considerable improvement in him. . ~ ' :x<; :
