FRANKLIN MEETING

MANAWHENUA WINS CUP

(By' Telegraph.) (Special; to "The Evening Post") ■".■■' PUKEKOHE, 9th May. Fine weather attracted a good crowd to the Franklin. Racing. Club's Extra Meet-! Jug to-day,, when some interesting sport was provided. The course was a trifle soft, after aiiiu through the .week, and there were, several, surprises, Hampton Park, Rangikaha, and First Lap all returning double figure dividends. The totalisator. handled £15,759 10s, compared with" £22,754 at 'the" .meeting held in March, •. '. "'" " ... HICU+ PITCH COMFORTABLY. High Pitch.at a good price for a second, favourite, scored a comfortable victory over Eouri- in the Bombay Hurdles, in which six of the runners fell High Pitch was always well placed, and, after assuming command when Whakania fell at the half-mile, came on to t sepre by over a length from Pouri, who finished on Kplidly froni a good way back. Quirisilia was five lengths ' away third, with St. Ames and Luminary next.' The winner is gaining confidence with every race, and should win something better through the winter. The stipendiary: steward, Mr. A. W. Gordon, spoke to. I*1. Foster, about his ■• handling of the favourite, Luminary, and advised Foster to ride his mount out in future. -, GOOD RUN ON RAILS. "Assisted by a beautiful run on the rails. Gay Lap,-who was favourite, was all out to win the .first division of the Pukekawa Hack Handicap^from Bronze :Tray. -Pro-, duction. and: Wild. Gp.iratry led:a. bunched field, iii to .the-, straight, and Gay.Lap then slipped through on; the fence' "to' beat Bronze Tray, who was off the course at the, turn. " Subeditor/was' three lengths away third, "and." Holly holm Was' fourth. Gay Lap.has raced very consistently this season, and; has notched two- wins and three minor placings in -five starts. Bronze Tray is an improver, and has not run a bad race since he commenced racing in March. '. ■'' ... :.. ..• .'• . . . HAMPTON PARK'S SURPRISE. Only five started in the Harrisville Flying Handicap, and Hampton, Park, the fourth .■"favourite, effected a surprise by winning easily from Gold Money and Hard Words. Soon, after going a furlong ■ Hard "Words and' Hampton Park cleared "away to be out about eight lengths before going three furlongs, and Hampton Park stayed on well, to win. by four.lengths from Gold Money, who finished on to beat Hard "Words for second. The walk-in start assisted Hampton Park, and he ran his best race to date. Gold Money came home really well, and may do better at Ellerslie, but. Paganelli did not appear to be at Home in the going. Hard Words, very sore, displayed fine speed, only to stop badly at "the end. FAVOURITE NARROWLY BEATEN. A good finish in the Pukekohe Cup saw Manawhenua just beat the'favourite, Antique. Sir Mond led for a couple of furtongs,'when Clbptoh took up the running from Eager Rose and British King. Manawhenua ran up third at the half-mile, and he assumed command at the turn, r-where Royal Doulton and Antique also became prominent. It looked as if Antique might win inside the distance, but Manawhenua Imng on well and gained the verdict by half a head. Royal Doulton was two and a half lengths away third, with : Eager Rose fourth. Manawheuua is a threo-year-old half-brother '■ by Acre to Taneriri: -; He - has ' -been-, steadily on the:. improve '. . fdr ; some : time, -;■ and. 5s ,-now, a very .useful horse. -Antique ran one of his best races, and Royal Doulton also made a good showing. Eager Rose did best of the others, most of whom appeared to be affected by the going. British King was going well until something seemed to go wrong with his gear, and he should do better at. his next attempt: at a mile and a quarter; I J KING FORD FAILS. ; On the strength of a good second to (Vandyke at Te Rapa, King Ford- was backed down to odds-on for the second division of the Pukekawa Handicap, but he 'stopped badly at the end, and was beaten into.third place by Rangikaha and King 3?eg, . : Rangikaha was well back in ,the early stages, and did not appear to have much chance when King Ford"was out clear in the middle stages. However, he finished on strongly and rewarded his .backers with a .double-figure dividend. t TEELS ALL THE WAY. - Royal Gallant, United, and Teeis were best backed for the Te Kohanga Handicap and they filled the places in reverse order. Teels led all the way but was lucky to beat United. Near the distance United was almost level with the winner, but for some reason that was not apparent Green checked him and then came right to the outside. When he got going again United went very fast and would Jiave caught the winner in another few 'strides. Royal .Gallant had every chance, and could not go on at the end. Teels is a two-year-old chestnut filly by Lord Quex from Lovelorn's" Martian daughter Lovemateh, and is hence a full-sister to the Auckland Cup' winner, Motere. SIX ALMOST IN LINE. S Sixhorses passed, the post-almost in line in '*. thrilling finish in .the Puni Hack'Handi<sap, "in" which First Lap anoV ' Trishna flashed np oh the outside', in'the last few Strides to £11 the dividend places.. SubEditor. Te Money, Trustee, and Taurua were disputing the issue inside the-dis-tance, when Alloy, Trishna, and First Lap also challenged. Te Money, who looked a winner with thirty yards to' 'go, was third/ and Alloy fourth: The favourite, Tajjr.ua, was right up also, and he was slightly-unlucky, as he lost some lengths When Tambourine came back' on him at the' half-mile, iip to which point he had been going '.very easily behind the leaders. Krst Lap returned the; best 'dividend of the day.1 ■- • ; .... . . ; ; CHIEF JOY DECISIVELY. Vandyke was a good favourite for the Paerata Handicap, and he, ran a solid race only to go under to Chief Joy, who scored yery decisively. Tetrachate and Hampton. Park' :set a -fast pace, and when the straight W'as_reached Chief Joy : dashed through to win from Vandyke, who began from the extreme outside and covered more ground than: anything else in the race.. Ruffles and Yolimond finished on well to dead-heat for third. Vandyke's stable mate, Havering; was only sixth choice in the betting', and failed to show \ip. However, he looked a picture, and may be seen to more advantage elsewhere H. Gray rode Vandyke, and the hurdle horseman, J. M'Rae, was on Havering. ; RESULTS IN DETAIL.
