COMBINED BANDS

SOUND FINANCES

Satisfaction with the sound state of the association's finances and with the attendance of delegates was expressed by the chairman, Mr. H. Baker, 'at 'the annual meeting of the Wellington District Combined Bands' Association.1

The chairman' said that, although not favoured *with the- best of weather ;uid conditions, the association had been able tc assist the bands this year, and he expressed the hope that the coming year would be beneficial to the bands, financi-' ally and otherwise. He'appealed to the delegates present to do all in their, power to encourage the junior bandsmen, and to that end he .appealed to the associated bands for the loan, of old brass instruments to start the learners' classes. He wished to thank the outgoing committee for the support accorded during the year, and also the bands for their co-operation, and although there was a lot of important work to bo done during the coming year, he was convinced that , the job would be tackled by the incoming committee with the best interests, of the association at heart. ' • . .

The annual report stated that only one public appearance of, the combined bands was made during the year, and the function was completely spoilt by heavy rain. Nevertheless the combined bands went through with the programme, and as a result of their efforts £16 6s Od was collected from the few hundred people present. A street day was held, and notwithstanding the hard work by a number of ladies and the presence in the streets of a band of 15 players, the result had to be regarded as being very poor, the sum of £28 12s Gd being obtained. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £5 Gs 2d, with no liabilities, and, taken in conjunction with the sum of £36 15s granted to seven bands during the year (£5 5s each), plus the waiving of affiliation fees amounting to £7 7s, was regarded as very satisfactory.
