NEWTOWN AND PETONE WIN
Although played under unfavourable conditions, the two Rugby League matches at,the Showgrounds produced some inter* esting football for a fair gathering of spectators. In their match against City, Newtown played a splendid forward game, revealing sufficient superiority in this department to prevent the dangerous opposing backs getting under way. Byron, M'Kewen, and Dutch did a lot of good work for Newtown, and Alerson was a stiong link in the chain of City backs, although few opportunities came his way. In the first spell matters were very even, and in the second each side had its turn on attack and defence. The M'Kenzie brothers were prominent on defence for City, and Joyce and Green also . played well, but Newtown .was a-better balanced and fitter team. .' Petone defeated Old Boys in a match which was a good exhibition of the cbde. Matters were keen all the way, and although Old Boys were the-first to attack,* the scoring was opened by Petone, Kelly receiving the ball from Grace to finish oil a bright back movement. Atr tack and counter-attack followed till halftime, but there was no further scoring until after the interval. Just after the resumption a solo effort by T. Love brought a try for Petone which Kelly converted, giving the suburban team an Bpoint lead. Old Boys tried strenuously to improve their position, Deinpsey* and Davies showing up prominently. The defence held, however, and after'the attack had been driven back Petone opened up in a bout of passing which sent Brace over for, a try which Kelly " converted. Just before, the finish• Holland scored for1 Old Boys and Dempsey converted, making the final score: Petonc 13, Old' Boys 5. .
