OVER 27,000 ON THE BOOKS
The Minister of Labour (the Hon. 3. G. Smith) states that owing to tho destruction of records in the Labour Bureau ivt Auckland in consequoncc of the recent disturbance caused by some of the unemployed, and, also to the loss of the records at Napier, caused by tle earthquake, it has not been possible to furnish, during the past couple of weeks returns showing the unemployment position throughout the, Dominion. Eeturns'for the week ended 23rd February havo now been compiled, and they show that the total applications then pending on the books of the Department were 27,662. The following are the returns of unemployed in the main centres for the "week under review:—
Of the grand total of 27,662, 8166' were new or renewed applications dur-| ing the week, and of the latter 34741 were from persons who had not previ-! ously registered during the past twelve J months. ' . j Again, it should be pointed out that! of the 27,662, 10,978 were qualified and j were pl.iced in employment under the i Unemployment Board's schemes No. 2j and No. 3.
