A CHINESE GAME

POLICE RAID HOUSE

PAKAPOO PLAYERS CAUGHT

Detectives raided a house occupied j by Chinese at 150, Taranalci street, j on Friday afternoon and arrested Love Sew, a labourer, aged 35, six Europeans, and two others. Sow appeared j before Mr. T. B. M'Ncil, S.M., at the j Magistrate's Court on Saturday, and was fined £25, in default two months' imprisonment, for using the promises as a common gaming house. The others wero each fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment, for being found in a common gaming houso without lawful excuse. Sub-Inspector Ward said that the accused was I.ho occupier of the premises, a dwcllinghouse, and for some timo past he had been using ono of tho rooms for the sale of palcapoo tickets. A warrant was taken out on Friday, and when detectives raided the place they found tho usual paraphernalia of a pakapop gaming house. The house was one that was frequented by a number-■ of Europeans. Mr. T. Jl. Crosswell, who appeared for the accused, said that he had used the premises as a pakapoo gaming house for a very short time. The defendant suffered from poor health and was unable to indulge in the usual hard work of the Chinese. He became unemployed, and rather than appeal for outside assistance, he had started the gaming house. It was apparently ono of the methods of tho Chinese to start pakapoo houses when they got out of work. Samuel Sutherland, a cook, aged 37; Arthur Metcalf, a labourer, aged 21f William Henry Taylor, a fireman, aged 30; George Mudgeway, an attendant, aged 52; Charlie Capstick, a labourer, aged 39; Jimmie Young, a labourer, aged 42; John Vardoy, a cook, aged 45; and David Christinson, a labourer, aged 29, were all'found ■in the room when the raid took place, said the Sub-Inspector. Some of them, were perusing the bank card and some were about to mark tickets. So far aa he knew, none of the accused had been before the Court before.
