(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

GISBOENE, This l\iy

About 11 o'clock on Saturday morning a boy on Waikanac beach noticed a bather floating in the water, and as he saw no movement he gav.e the alarm to the caretaker and then dashed in and brought out the body, which was that of John Marshall, aged 29.- . ■ Artificial respiration was Jried. for over an hour without success. Death is believed to be due to heart failure.

Marshall's parents are dead. He earao from Edinburgh about five years ago, residing with an uncle, James M' Allen Marshall, in Gisborne. He was employed as a night porter at Morore Hotel, but was spending a brief holiday at Gisborne. At the inquest a verdict of accidental drowning whilst bathing was returned. The coroner remarked that it was- difficult to account for the drowning, as Marshall was able to swim, and the medical evidence showed that.there was nothing wrong with him physically or organically. The evidence of the police showed that v careful search was made of tho beach, but there was no sign of tho clothes in which the deceased had left home, though a bicycle and a towel were found.
