JUNIOR TENNIS

TWO TOURNEYS OR 4 ONE ?

TO. BE CONSIDERED BY NEW • ZEALAND'DELEGATES

A "general meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association will be held in ■ the ' Chamber of Commerce Boom, "■ Dominion" Buildings, Mercer street, Wellington, at 4 p.m. on Friday, 27th February. Delegates are reminded that-for the first time ou record the council will meet at 4 o'clock iv the afternoon. Two motions, both to be moved on behalf of the Management Committee by Mr, A. G. Henderson, are on the order paper, and both concern junior players. They are as follows: —"That a New Zealand juniors' hard> court championship tournament be held in May, 1031, under the conditions adopted by the council at the meeting held on 27th November, 1930." A secretary 's. npt'e is appended drawing attcutipn to the fact that "under Rule 45 of the rules and regulations of the association the council's adoption of any alteration to the rules and regulations'cannot take effect until Ist July following such adoption, unless the council by a two-thirds'majority shall otherwise decide." The second motion states: "That in view'of'the .fact that the New Zealand juniors' hard court championships, as approved by .(tho council, are not .•open championships, the Management' .Committee-, recommends to the council thatthc New Zealand ju;iior lawn tennis championships continue to lie hold.in,conjunction witli tho New Zealand championships." . The.main question with delegates concerning these two motions will bo w.h other it is necessary or beneficial lo juniors to have two gatherings in the 'one season, and whether it is better to have the juniors assembled in . tho glimmer or the winter. Some associations' will also be' forced to view the matter,-so far as the extra-■tournament 4 concerned, at leant, from a financial point "of "View, at 'the present time. Careful consideration is necessary, and any hurried decision may reflect upon the sport in the future. ;Maori. Championships Postponed. The annual championship tournament of the Maori Lawn Tennis Association was to be held.during March at Auel;lnnd,*!apd under ordinary conditions, so far 33 this Dominion is concerned, a great, gathering of the Maori tribes as well as competitors was assured. The Maori takes this annual gathering very serioji'slyj not altogether from the playjiig:poVnt of. view, but mainly from the fait* that--the,.-.sport nf lawn tennis has lie»'ii "large-Iy-^responsible for bringing together.-the different tribes, where all j ot;h?y"'mearis had failed. The decision of j ths vxeeutivs committee, which is located at Wellington, that the tournament be postponed may be in. opposition ■f.i the wishes of the- Maori people, but

the "Big Chiefs" have spoken, and the rank and file will have it made clear to them that the decision is a wise one. In fact, the executive committee is to be commended on having had the courage to face1 the situation in the manner in wlrich they have done. The notice to thole concerned reads as follows:; — "I am directed'by my. executive committee to advise you that it has beeu decided after duo and careful deliberation to postpone the Maori Lawn Tennis Associations' tournament, which was decided to be held in Auckland this year. It was resolved that in view of the economic depression, through which the Dominion is now passing, and the necessity of exercising rigid economy at such a time, it would be to the interest of the Maoris race- in general and to the Maori tennis public in particular to postpone the Maori Lawn/Tennis- Associations' tournament this year.'-',.. When the affairs of the country brighten, as they surely will, then the Maoris will asse-mble once again as they have done in the past.
