PLUNKET SOCIETY

DECEMBER AND JANUARY

The'monthly meeting of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was held recently. There were present Misses Cameron, in the chair, Mesdames Symon, Hannah, Wood, Johnson, Aiken, Kalph, Miller, White, Ilott, M'Eldowjiay, M'Lean, Leach, Collins, Brown, Tythe-Brown, Mirams, Corkhill, Hoggard, Maylor, and Miss Barnett. Apologies were" received from Mesdames Paterson, Hodson, Bullock, Hall, Burgess, M'Donald, Emerson, Luke, Fotheringham, Davidson, and Hassell. A motion of sympathy with the family of the late Mr. S. A. Longuet was passed. Mr. Longuet had been a member of the Citizens' Committee which gave the Truby King Karitane Hospital to the society; he had always been a most sympathetic and loyal supporter of the work, and his death is a very great loss to the Plunl.ot So«iety. The committee recorded its> sympathy with the sufferers by the earthquake. The secretary reported that on receipt of the newa the services of the Plunket nurses and the Truby King Karitane Hospital had been immediately offered to the Health Department and the Ked Cross Society, the society being anxious to do all it could to help mothers with babies. Mrs. J. M. A. Ilott was appointed to represent the society on the executive of the Earthquake Relief Fund. The committee resolved to commence making clothes immediately for children up to seven years of age, the work to be carried on through the year, and the finished garments to be handed to the Plunket nurses for distribution to necessitous people. Mrs. J. A. Hannah was welcomed back from her long visit to Sydney. It was resolved to send a letter to the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, congratulating him on being made a Companion of the Ocder of St. Michael and St. George. Nominations for the office .of president, proposed and seconded, are to be sent to the secretary not later than Wednesday, 25th February.. The Plunket Nurses' report for December and January gave the following par* ticulars:—Total number of new cases*, 277; total number of visits to homes, 3510; total number of visits to offices, adults 4340, babies 3131, children 479, detailed as follows: At headquarters, 1534, 724, 194; Eastbourne, 166,-141, 34; Seatoun, 199, 184, 17; Miramar,. 237, 219, 19; Lyall Bay, 292, 276, 11; Hataitai, 247, 214, 27; Newtown, 193, 152, 14; Island Bay, 262, 224, 16; Brooklyn, 295, 211, 10; Kelburn, 81, 70, 12;. Karori; 271, 240, 29; Northland, 172, 137, 23; Ngaio, 186, 130, 18; Khandallah, 89, 71, 14; Johnsonville, 102, 90, 4; Tawa Flat, 2, 2, 0; Porirua, 19, 14, 4; Plimmerton, 19, 19, 2; Eastbourne,. 166, 141, 34. Visits to homes were paid in all the above districts, and to .homes in Kaiwarra, Titahi Bay, Paremata, and Pukerua Bay. Number of babies wholly, breastfed, 222; number of babies, partially breastfed, 25; nuniber of babies artificially, fed, 30; number'*6f'expectant mothers/new cases, 83; number of expectant mothers still under supervision, 385; return visits to expectant mothers! to' ante-natal clinic, 449. The nurses thank the ladies who motor, ed them to. their cases, also the committee for Christmas, cake, Miss Sybil Nathan for Christmas cake, Mrs. M'fcldownay' for shortbread and hom,e-made soap. Clothing collected by Mrs. Morgan from Mesdames Fraser, Cooper, Inkster, Paisley, Marsden, and toys and books from Masters Grosvenor, Francis, and Morgan were made into suitable parcels and distributed for Christmas by the nurses. Mrs. Cook was thanked for £1 to buy fruit for'those in need of it, , Parcels* of baby clothes came from Mesdames Hanson and, Leigh Hunt, the Northland Methodist Church, and flowei's from Mrs. Wilson. •'•,-■. Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Dannevirke, Lower: Hutt, Petone, aud Wellington1 and suburbs.
