RIVER DAMAGE

DIVERSION PROBABLE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j NAPIER, 10th February. The position of tho-rivers is not so serious as was at first thought. The north bank of the: Tutaekuri is damaged for three miles, creating a! potential danger, but aetivo steps are being taken to put things in, order, and it is probable that the'river will be immediately diverted through an,, overflow channel from Meeanee to the sea at the Waitangi Eiver a scheme to be provided for by tho board. This overflow channel is already in existence, and tho banks are secure. All that is required is the deepening and widening of the pilot channel for two miles. This will give the same fall to the sea and will cut out four miles of the present course.
