PERSONAL SACRIFICE

It was reported yesterday Lhat at least one Minister, and possibly others, had informed Mr. Forbes of their willingness to resign their portfolios in order to pave the way for a coalition. We can heartily commend this evidence of genuine concern for the country. If a National Government is to be formed personal sacrifices will be called for. If they are made voluntarily it will simplify the task of the leaders, but in any circumstances this is not a time when personal ambitions can be allowed to influence the course of affairs. The politician who loudly proclaims his. concern for the country must be prepared to prove his sincerity by putting the country before his own position. The patriotism which adds a proviso—"Sacrifice is demanded of everyone —except me"—is no patriotism at all. In the difficult days that are ahead such professions of willingness to serve will be submitted to searching scrutiny. , The public will insist upon knowing whether principles or persons have stood in the way of unity—and what persons.
