PENALTY ON RATES

COUNCIL'S QUANDARY

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIROA, 10th February. fJ -A unique position was disclosed last night at a meeting of the AVairoa Borough Council when, the question of imposing a 10 per cent. ■ penalty on rates came up for discussion. I A section of the Act which was read showed that any councillor in arrears could not vote on a motion granting him any financial benefit, and this would be the case if councillors present voted for a remission of the 10 per cent, penalty. The information came as a bombshell, as only one councillor present had paid his rates, although he had been allowed until the end of February to do so. After a lengthy discussion the meeting was adjourned until Thursday to enable the council to communicate with the Minister of Internal Affairs, seeking relief.
