UNDER LIFE SENTENCE

CASE OF MRS. OLIVE WISE

BIRTH OF TWINS IN PRISON

LONDON, 9th February. Mrs. Olive Wise, under sentence of imprisonment for life, gave birth to twins —a boy and a girl—on Friday, in the'prison hospital. The Governor, who is a surgeon, himself attended the mother. The babies are. progressing well. The confinement was a close secret, only those in attendance on Mrs. Wise being aware of the event, which is particularly interesting, as there has been considerable public agitation for Mrs. Wise's release before the birth of the children. On 3rd February, in the House of Commons, Miss B. Picton-Turbcrvill's Bill prohibiting the passing of death sentence on expectant mothers, supported by members of all parties, was read a first time. The introduction of the Bill arises out of the case in which Mr. Justice Charles sentenced to death Mrs. Olive Wiso, aged 37, who, in a fit of desperation, placed the head of her nine-months-old son in a gas oven on Christmas Eve because sho was unable to bear .the thought of a foodlcss Christmas.. ' Later the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
