HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 7th instant, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.-^-Very littla demand at aucti9n; 800 casks offered, 79! sold. After auction (sellers were prepared to go on at the decline. Present quotations for spot are:— Mutton: Fine, 26s 6d to 275; fair to good, 22s 6d to 255; dark to dull; 20s to 21s. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 25s to 265; fair to good, 21s to 235; dark to dull, 19s to 20s. Mixed: Fair to good, 20s 6d to 26s fid; dark to dull, 19s to 20s. Gut, etc., 17s to 20s. . „ Hemp.—Manila market easier, IV trade, February/April shipment quoted £19 buyers. Sisal: Market steady, no material' change in value, nominally unchanged. No first hand sales reported. Wool.—Sales closed Friday. After disappointing opening, it was announced at s beginning of second week that sales would he curtailed five days. Catalogued quantities were small and prices tempting, and from then on there was a marked increase, both in demand and competition, and sales closed at the highest point of series, although still 5 per cent to 7% per cent, ■on average below December rates. Average closing values:—64's, super lOd to Is (nominal), average 7d to B%d; 56/58's, 8d to 9%d; 50/56's, 7]/ 2 d to B%d; 46/00's, 6%d ■to 8d; 40/46's, Od to 7%d: 36/40's, Sv4d to 6%d. Total offerings 108,000 bales, of -which 97,500 were sold, Home trade taking 59,500, and Continent 38,000 bnles. 3ffnety thousand, bales held over, including 82,500 bales which were not offered. Next series commence 10th March.
