THE NATAL MEN

TEIBUTE BY DR. VALINTDTE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Bth February.. "A glowing tribute to the work of the naval men at Napier was pjlid by; Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, ex-Director- ! General of Health, who has just returned to Taranaki. "It would bo disastrous to Napier and the surrounding country if the Navy were withdrawn, as I understand is possible in the next few days," ha said. "I sincerely hope some portion, of the bluejackets and marines are retained for police duty until the Borough Council arid other authorities can function. There aro certain ghouls who batten on the disaster. This disturbing element has already made itself felt, and for the administration of Napier strong men arc needed." Dr. ■Valintine said he was proud of the way the Government departments were tackling the great problem," a^nd appealed for co-operation with the Prime Minister in the stupendous task ahead. Ho believed it would be a long timo before Napier could.be left unprotected, and suggested that the Navy should bo given control or that a strong man, such os Mr. S. S. Allen, Administrator of Samoa, should be placed in charge. Dr. Valintine said he believed Commissioner AVohlmannhad arranged for 37 additional police officers to go ta the district, but he believed even tha Commissioner of Police would recognise that force would not be sufficient if the naval men were'withdrawn.
