MATERNITY CASES

MOKE PROVISION NEEDED

The Health Department wishes it to be widely known among those responsible for the care of refugees from the earthquake area that in the case of expectant mothers or those recently conlined, any further necessary arrangements should be made through the hospital board of the district in which the women are for the time being resident. All hospital boards concerned have been requested by the Health Department to co-operate with existing organisations and to arrange for the antenatal care, the confinement, and the after-care of the mother and infant for as long as may be necessary. Already in Wellington, a suitable home has, by the kindness of Lady Bell, been placed at the disposal of the authorities 'for the purpose of housing a considerable number of women who are shortly expecting their confinement and who have had to leave their homes. Anyone who can offer similar facilities in other districts where these may be required are invited to communicate with the hospital boards of those districts. It must be recognised that many expectant mothers and those recently confined will require a great deal of care before, during, and after labour, and owing to the fact that many will not have homes to return to, provision for the care of mother and infant wil] be required for some weeks after the birth. This after-care can in most cases best be provided for in homes specially established for the purpose. Co-opera-tion and help will be appreciated. Communication should, in the first instance, be made to the local hospital board of the district where prospective patients are residing temporarily. All organisations interested in maternal and child welfare arc invited to cooperate with their local hospital boards to assist in this emergency. ' I
