SIR C. HOLDSWORTH RETIRES

It is announced that Sir Charles Holdsworth has relinquished tho posi-: tion of managing director of the Union' Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited, being desirous of spending most of his time in England, where he hopes to enjoy a well-earned leisure after his long and strenuous service with the company. In accepting tho resignation with great regret, the directors of the company, at a board'meeting, on. Thursday last, passed a resolution expressing their appreciation of Sir Charles's valuable and important services over a period of 45 years. Sir Charles will still remain one of the directors of the company. Like Sir James Mills, tho veteran founder of the company, who still holds the position of chairman, and who -is at present! on a visit to New Zealand, Sir Charles Holdsworth was born in Wellington. His connection with the Union Company began in ISBS, when Mr. W. R. Williams 's Black

Dtamojid Line oE steamers, for which Mr. Holdsworth was manager at AVestport, was taken over by the company, which he joined in the same capacity. Six years later the company purchased the undertaking of the Tasinanian Steam Navigation Company, and Mr. Holdsworth was appointed' as their manager for Tasmania. In 1898 he returned to New Zealand as chief manager and inspector, an office which was changed in 1901 to that of general manager. He became a director of the company in 1909, and on Sir James Mill's's resigning the active control into his hands early in 1914 he was ap- j pointed managing director. ' For his services to New Zealand and tlio Empire in tlio way of shipping, he was honoured in 1926 with a knighthood. ] During the last few years ho has been attending to the company's affairs in ( London, with occasional visits to New I Zealand. ( , - Mr. Aiken has had a long connection j with the Union Company. He served . in various capacities until November, ( 1899, when he was appointed to the . position of inspector.
