SCIENTISTS ON SPOT
WIDE INVESTIGATIONS
The seismological records obtained at the Dominion Observatory; > Kelburn, and elsewhere place the epicentre of the earthquake to the north pf Napier and offshore. The distance readings of the aftor-shocks place them as occurring on a fault line running roughly from Hastings to Wairoa. Dr. 0. E. Adams, Government Seismologist, accompanied by an officer' from the Magnetic Observatory at Christchurch,left "Wellington for Hawkcs Bay on Thursday. He has with him a portable seismologieal instrument, and from the records obtained on this and on other instruments installed at New Plymouth, Arapuni, and Takaka it is hopedf'to get some in^ structive data which can be co-ordin-ated with that -obtained at the main observatories. '■;.'• ■■•The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has dispatched today geologists to the disturbed area. Dr. J. Henderson, Dr. P. Marshall, and Mr. Ongley have left for the scene. Dr. Henderson and Mr. Ongley will examine the country to the west of the railway line and northwards of Napier towards Wairoa and Gisbbrne. Dr. Marshall will concentrate on the shore problems, investigating Harbour/Board and Public. Works/difficulties along the coast and inland from Cape Kidnappers northwards. ■ '
