MANY MESSAGES
FROM FAR AND NEAR
Messages of sympathy continue to pour into New Zealand front all- parts of tho world. Amongst others received by His Excellency the GovernorGeueral, in addition to those already published, are the following:— From General Higgins, Salvation Army, London:— "On behalf of the Salvation Army throughout the world, I desire to es> press to Your Excelleney^and through you to the people of New Zealand, our heartfelt sympathy with those who have suffered in the appalling catastrophe which has overtaken them. You may rely upon rfty officers in New Zealand to render every service in their power' to relieve the distress occasioned by this sad disaster." From the Empire Farmers' Party, London:— "With deepest and heartfelt sympathy to you and your people from the Empire Farmers' Party." j From General Sir Charles Fergusson,' Ayr:— '' My wife and I arc deeply grieved' at sad news, and send through Your ' Excellency to Government and people ' of Dominion our heartfelt sympathy."! From tho Premier of Tonga: — "My Ministry Join me in conveying to Your Excellency, on behalf people of Tonga, an expression of grave concern and deepest sympathy at news of Niipier disaster." From Lord Liverpool:— "Please accept deepest sympathy from Lady Liverpool and myself at terrible disaster." The Prime Minister has received messages from the Lord Mayor of Syjlney, Methodist Church of Australasia, Danish Consul-General at Sydney, Japanese Consul-General at Sydney, and Orient Steamship Navigation Company. 1 ( Amongst other messages received in New Zealand are those' from the British Ked Cross Society, Pan-Ameri-can Bed Cross, Nash Motor Company, New South Wales Returned Soldiers' Association, British League of Nations Union, London, Canadian Press Association, British Trades Union Congress and National Labour Party, Australian Body Builders' Association. His Grpce Archbishop Redwood reqeived the following message from the Governor-General last evening:— "Your church and priesthood have our most sincere .sympathy in the tragic disaster at Greenmeadows Marist Seminary at Napier, especially the injured and the . relations of the fathers and students killed. —Bledisloe." ' > . The following messages of sympathy have been received, by the General:-*-From the President of the United1 States: "I am deeply shocked by'thfi news of Napier disaster, and on behalf of I tho American people extend sympathy to the sufferers in the stricken • areas.— Herbert Hoover." From the Yieeroy and- Govornor-Gen-eral of India: "Only partial' reports have yet reached India regarding terrible earthquake near Napier, but I should' like you to know how deeply I and all in India deplore the tragic loss of life, and sympathise with all those who have suffered in this catastrophe.-ijViceroy.'' From the1 Governor of Weltern Australia: • ' "Please convey deepest sympathy of Lady Campion and myself -with people of New Zealand, especially with those j who have suffered injury and bereavement in terrible earthquake.—Campion,' Governor of Western Australia." ] From the Governor of Malta: "On my own behalf and on behalf of Ministers desiro to tender to you and to J!OBi' Government an expression of ■deepest ->-mpathy at the appalling disaster which has befallen New Zealand. —Governor." ■ From. Lady Victoria Braithwaite, London: ' ' "Kindly convey my deepest sympathy with Government and all who have suffered'in 'earthquake disaster." 'From the Austin Motor Company, Birmingham: "Sending one hundred pounds with sincere sympathy for sufferers in earth- ■ qunke.—Austin Motor Company." ; From Co-operative Wholesale Society, | Manchester: j "Board of Directors Co-operative I Wholesale Society, Manchester, ex- j presses deepest sympathy with bereaved ! and sufferers from earthquake.—Lan-1 caster, secretary." From the Governor of New South Wales: "Have been asked to convoy to Your Excellency 'following resolution passed by Legislative Assembly of New South Wales: That this House desires to express profound sorrow and sympathy of peoplo of New South Wales with the | citizens of New Zealand in- the appal-1 ling loss of lifo and suffering caused i by the tragic earthquake in the Napier, district, and their deep sympathy and, condolence with. the sufferers in the disaster. —(Signed) Governor of New i South Wales." ' : From the •■ Lieutenant-Governor of British' Columbia: ■ "On behalf of the people of British Columbia will you please convey to your Government and tho people of New Zealand our heartfelt sympathy in the irreparable loss suffered in tho earthquake.—(Signed) B. Bandolph Bruce, Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, S. F. Tolmie, Premier of British Columbia." . . From Lord Stonehaven, House of Lords, London": "Deeply shocked by news of terrible disaster and offer heartfelt sympathy to sufferers. —(Signed) Stonehaven." From Lord Mayor of Melburne: "On behalf of the citizens of Melbourne I desire to convey our heartfelt sympathy with the sufferers in tho deplorable disaster which has overtaken youil Dominion^ —(Signed) Luxton, Lord MaVor." The- secretary of the Wellington Sunday School Union has received a cable from the National Sunday School Union in London expressing sincerest sympatEy with the earthquake-sufferers. The following message was 'received by the Dominion executive of Toe H: "Toe H, Australia and Victorian State executive suffers as you suffer, mourn as you mourn, and rejoices in our common hope. Stand- fast." •v The following cablegram was received yesterday by the Dominion Secretary of the League of. Nations Union:— "Deepest sympathy terrible earthquake disaster. (Signed) British League, of Nations Union Secretary."
