STONE FOR MEMORIAL

TENDERS ACCEPTED

A mectiug of the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum was held 'in Parliament Building 'on Tuesday and Wednesday. There were present: Mr. G. Shirtcliffe (chairman), Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle (Minister of Internal Affairs), his Worship the Mayor'(Mr. G. A. Troup), Sir Harold Beauchamp, Colonel Carbury (representing New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts), Dr. P. Marshall aud Mr. B. C. Aston (New Zealand Institute), Mr. W. K. B. Oliver (director, Dominion Museum), Mr. G. P. Newton (Under-Secretary, Internal Affairs), Mr. H. D. Bennett (chairman, Carillon Committee), and Mr. A. S. Mitchell (New Zealand Institute of Architects). The architects, Messrs. Gummer and Ford, > the quantity surveyor, Mr. J. A. Stewart, and the' hon. treasurer, Mr. F. B. Dwyer, also attended. The chairman referred to the public work of the late Hon. T. Shailer Weston, and moved: "That the doepest sympathy of "the board be conveyed to Mrs. Weston and relatives on the death of the Hon. Shniler Weston, and that the board's appreciation of the services rendered by Mr. Weston to the cause of art .in this city, more particularly his services in connection ■with the temporary board of trustees, be recorded." This was carried, members standing in silence. , For the demolition of brick buildings on the Mount Cook site, the- tender of J.- L. M'Millan was accepted, the amount of the tender? being £1800. Dr. Pi Marshall furnished a report on the suitability for building purposes and quantity available of vitrie tuff. A discussion on building stones followed, and on the motion of Mr. Shirtcliffe the board decided to adopt Putaruru stone for the stone, work reqnired in all the buildings to be erected, on the Mount Cook site. The proportion of pink and grey stone to be used was left in the hands of the architects.' ' The tenders of P, Graham, Christchurch, were accepted for the Carillon tower and steps; , tower, £17,110, and steps and terraces, £4000. ■
