NEWSPAPER'S JUBILEE
NAPIER 'DAILY TELEGRAPH"
It was only on Saturday' that the Napier "Daily Telegraph"' celebrated its diamond jubilee with a special issue which contained, among other interesting ; matter, details , ; of the progress of the newspaper and some of the early history of the ctty and Hawkes Bay Province. . And.riow the modern.offices of the paper and also those of its contemporary, the" Hawkes Bay Herald," have been wiped out by the earthquake. In the "Daily Telegraph's" jubilee number there were many illustrations, the captions of which, in view of tho tragic events that have since occurred, supply a very real touch of poignancy. For instance, there 'was one view of Napier from the hills, and the many handsome buildings shown were referred to as ...«..■''.'-forest of bricks and mortar." Above another photograph of Napier was the heading, "The Nice of iho Pacific." There also appeared a photograph of .ruins after a fire, with the following'lines: "After the 'Telegraph' fire—a mass of tangled wreckage." The '/Telegraph" office- has been destroyed again, and is worse than a "mass of tangled wreckage."
