RACE FOR HACK CUP
ARIKIRA BEATS GRAND JURY
Arikira, the half-brother by. Limond to Maui, has had only sis weeks' racing, but with four wins in that short time he has stamped himself as a performer very much above the average. In the Nolan; Gold Cup Handicap, he registered his best win to date, for he took the outside running most.of the way, and still had considerable ground to make up coming, into the straight, but finished with remarkable resolution, and wore down Grand Jury ■ over the last few chains, winning by a head. The pair had the others well beaten, the pace-making Tentcall being a good two lengths back thir,d. Arikira has now won his-way out of Jiack rants, but he should prove worthy., steel for open company.. . ■ After the race Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., called on Mrs. J. Gray, wife of the club's president, to present the gold cup. He mentioned that the club had considered postponement of the meeting on account of ' the earthquake disaster, but had de- ■ cided that^as no end-could be served by ' such action, the meeting' should go on | Mrs. Gray then presented the,cup to Mr. V. Bryant, who accepted it on behalf of his wife. Grand Jury was made nearly £100 better favourite than Arisus, with ■ Arikira, Tobaccoland, and Joyspear nearly as well supported. Grand Jury wag'.l,well'placed air the way, and tdbk charge from Tentcall and. Joyspear,at the distance, but he could not withstand Arikira's determined challenge over the final part of the race. Nevertheless he registered another attractive effort, and his luck should change i shortly. Tentcall and Joj-spear were pace- | makers to the straight, and they stuck on to finish third and fifth respectively Banbridge, who was fourth, improved throughout, and was going strongly. ..Arisus was never . a possibility, but , lie passed several tiring horses toi finish sixth, and Tobaccoland, drawing one of^the outside marbles, was quickly near the front. He was third, behind Joyspear .and Tentcall, till three furlongs ■ from • home, when he began to drift, and finish"cd eighth among the others. Monaloff, i^Werata, and Statuary did best, but none ever looked like being in the money.
