DIFFICULT CLIMB
ASCENT OF MOUNT TASMAN

The distinction of being the first climber to make the ascent of Mount Tasman by the eastern arete and also the first New Zealand party to reach the crest, belongs to Mr. Bod Syme, of Hawera. and Mr. L. V. Bryant, of Wellington, who returned to their homes this week after a visit to the Southern Alps. The pair were without guides, and waited ut Haast Hut from 23rd December to 29th January. Before reach- | ing their objective sis previous starts I were made, but each attempt was foiled by alpino storms. The ascent and descent from Haast Hut, including the traverse of Mount Lenderfelt, took, 15J hours. Only four other parties hdvo been known to .reach the peak of Tasman, which is regarded as the most difficult climb in theSouthern Alps.
