S.P.C.A.. ACTIVITIES
Mu. G. Mitchell presided over the usual fortnightly meeting of the Wellington Sor cicty for the Prevention of Cruelty ■to Animals, which was held recently. A report received stated that the whole of the stock pens at the Municipal Abat^ toirs at Ngahauranga weve. badly overt crowded, some to more.than double their reasonable holding capacity. Sheep, pigs, und calves had been found to be herded 'together in one pen. In some pens, it was stated, the animals were so crushed that it was impossible for many of them to lie down at one time." Most" of the animals had been in the pens since the day before, and could not be killed until the following day. The overcrowding' had been responsible for sheep being smothered to death, and great cruelty had undoubtedly been caused on account ot these conditions. A copy of the report had been forwarded to the City Council with a re^ quest that the conditions be .at; once remedied. It was resolved that unless the council remedied the position immediately, steps should be taken by the society on ac; count of the cruelty inflicted on the anu mals. The* inspector stated .that in addition to his inspections and work; in the city, a visit had been paid, to the south: cm portion of the Munawatu district, where inspection work had been carried out. No cases of a very serious nature were reported. It was resolved to send the inspector to the earthquake area immediately to render assistance. ;
