NAPIER REDUCED TO CHAOS
DEADLY BLOW OF APPALLING SUDDENNESS
The terrible tragedy of Napier and Hastings is revealed as more news comes through. In the first days the difficulty of securing reliable information raised fears of appalling disaster, jln the messages now received by wireless, telegraph, and aeroplane from "The Post's" special representatives those fears are confirmed. Napier has been shattered and burnt, and Hastings has suffered scarcely less severely. The loss of life and personal injury in the two towns cannot yet be estimated. Rescue work is difficult, and it may be days before all the missing are found. Yet amid the havoc of earthquake and fire townspeople and helpers have worked heroically. The injured are now being removed to Palmerston and Wellington, and women and children are being taken from the shattered towns. As the sewerage system is broken, an order has been given for the early evacuation of Napier.
