HERE AND THERE

Trentham Horses. The next meeting at which Trentham horses are likely Jo be ■ freely engaged is the Woodville Meeting at the end of the month. Several, however, will not race again till the Wellington Autumn Meeting. ■, ■ . Very Short Spell. Pavilion, who. was sent away after her defeat in Tattersall's Cup, rejoined E. F. Walker's team at Randwick last Thursday. Although her let-up" was short, it is stated to have done-her good^ ■ Probably for Stud. Dainty Ways has been returned by her trainer (A. Goodman) to. her owner (Mr. R. P. Lees), and present intentions are not to 'race her; again, but" to use her as a broodmare riext'season. Mr. Lees? Has leased Lady Rene from Goodman, and she will now carry his colours. : Tcheka Back. Tcheka (Night Raid—Russian Maid), who has not raced for over twelve months, has put in a'reappearance at Trentham, and he is now a member of J. M'La^hlin's team. When he was turned out he was operated on for respiratory trouble, and it will be interesting to note the. progress ho makes as his preparation advances. . , Brief Spell Over. ' Rothen, is back on the track again at Trentham, but his trainer (J. Olsen) is not yet allotting him fast work. Rothen has had a brief let-up following being physicked, and he has returned looking much, improved. He will be,racing again; in the autumn. ■>>;,, Exchange of Horses. r.'?-'..:■

Araemo, whom it was found impossible to train owing to respiratory trouble, has been given in exchange by/his owner (Mr. J. O'Meara). to Mr. P. B. Vallance, ot Masterton, for an unraced five-year-old chestnut gelding named The Fool. This gelding is by Hymestra from the Absurd mare Foolish, a full-sister to Radiac, Para, and Lady Cintra, and it is intended to; try-him over the. feuces in the hope that he may show the same aptitude for the game as has been' displayed by other members of his family. He is to join up with A. Goodman's team at Trentham. Araemo's future appearances will probably be in the show-ring. Vellmond Reappears. Veilmond was a runner for the Kurnell Handicap at Randwick last Monday week, and considering he had 8.7, did well to finish a,good fifth i!t a six furlongs race run in Train llsee. He is stated to be in excellent trim for the time, and should be well forward in condition before he goes to Melbourne. Veilmond gave the impression of having developed since he raced in the spring. Not Worried. The Toowoomba (Queensland) Turf Club must be unique in Australian racing circles at the moment, because it has made no attempt to reduce stakes for its cup carnival this year. Unlike the general run of racing clubs, the Toowoomba body is not finding the depression affecting attendances. In fact, racing on ;the Downs has never been in a more health* state. Red Heckle's Brother. The two-year-old brother to Red Heckle, for whom the name Convoy has beenclaimed, was.not hurried m the early part of the season, but a Riccarton report states tiiat he is striding out,now m strong work,.and apparently he is to^do some, racing in the autumn. He has grown into a horse of attractive appearance, and he looks a more hardy sort than his relative, whose delicate constitution has been a great handicap.. This juvenile member of-the family has plenty of speed, and he should be seen to advantage■m a race before the end of the season. Beacon Light Out. Beacon I/ight, an unsound gelding, who raced twice unsuccessfully at the holiday, period, after a long absence .from the racecourse, has been sent into retirement, as lie is unlikely ever to-■ reproduce the form he showed at three and four years, when the won the C.J.C. Spring Plate, beating Star Stranger, the Wanganm Higgie Handicap, Avdndale Cup,' and' Wellington Ohampron ■ Plate, beating SeatoWn. Te Monanui, The Hawk, and others. By Boniform, from Simper, this gelding, who is now eight years old, claims relationship with one of .the most brilliant families in the Stud Book, other members being Gold Light, Razzle Dazzle, Dazzling Light, and Lucky Light. Chide in Work. The former New Zealand performer Chide, for whom Mr. T. C. Trautwein is reported to have paid £6000, has finished his holiday, and has rejoined F. T. Cush's team at Randwick (says a Sydney writer). As his purchase price implies, Chide was a really good performer in the Dominion last season, winning at each oE his only five starts, but he has proved difficult to train since his ai-riyal in Sydney,'and has twice gone amiss on the^eye of big meetings. His only placing" in Australia so far is a second in the Rosehill Rawson Stakes, but he looks well after his rest, and the forthcoming autumn carnival might sec him in his best form again. ■ .. . Sister to Eaglet. Columba, the full-sister to Eaglet, was making her third appearance in a race when she ran a close second to Easter Time in the Hobson Hndicap, six furlongs, at Takapuna on Saturday. As in the Calliope Handicap on Thursday, she began smoothly, but on this occasion, although the distance was a furlong further she stuck to her task throughout and was able to beat her stable-mate, Chief Jewel, a double winner at the meeting in December. Chief Jewel, nevertheless, was I not disgraced, for he wag carrying two stone.more, and went, down only by, » head sftar awristing big mat* in th« pace' making.' Cornmba is' a dark cbestnc* in

colour, thus differing from her sister, who is a bay, and she,is likely tovwin a race before the season' ends. Will Do Better. Gay. Duke, who ran two .good races at Takapuna last week at his first starts this season, is closely related to Paganelli, being a four-year-old bay gelding by Paganelli's sire. (Lord Quex) from Salvette, a granddaughter of Paganelli's dam (Ringdove). Gay Duke's best performances were as a two-year-old, when he finished third to Polyxena and Awarautu in.a juv- . enile event at Te Aroha and occupied'a . similar position to Gemliglit and Eaglet in the Victoria Handicap,..six furlongs, at . Ellerslie. He started on three occasions , last season, without being placed, but oh [ his latest showings he should soon.be . doing better. ! Improving Biddy's Boy. < ; Biddy's Boy made a, gallant attempt to ; win the Wynyard Plate at Takapuna on . Saturday from end to end,, and only Ross- . hire was able to frustrate his gamble. He ; is one of the most improved hacks in the » North at present, and he now looks like

fulfilling the promise he made when he ran Cylinder to a neck in the Avondale Guineas in September. After that attractive performance he failed on several occasions, not actually breaking his maiden status till last Thursday in poor company, but his Saturday's effort marked him as definitely in line with . the L best of < his class. He was bred in Auckland, his sire,. Illumination, being an Australian-bred horse who raced well for several seasons on Auckland courses. ' ;■. ..• , ' Odds and Ends. Nominations for the Woodville District Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close at 9 o'clock to-morrow evening. The telegraph office at -Woodville closes at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club* Autumn Meeting close at 9 o'clock to-morrow evening. G-. Jones will not be facing any of his team until the Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meeting on Saturday fortnight. Bonrose, who was recommissioned by_ the Rie'cartbn trainer S. Barr a few weeks ago, is going on well in her preparation. When at her best she is a smart galloper, and she may pick up a stake at one of the autumn meetings. I S. Barr has' also brought in Starshooter again. This useful handicap performer looks well after his rest, and he isMiow I being prepared for racing in the autumn.-. F. Christmas has taken Red Heckle in | hand again at Eiccarton, after spelling him for about six months. It is unlikely that he will be ready, to race until the spring,; but it'ia hopedl he will train on all, right, as: he- represents gdpd/class ,when at his best. ■ After his brilliant achievements at the Auckland Cup carnival, it was thought' that Karapoti would go to Randwick flu1 the autumn meetings. The three-year-old was' missing from the Doncaster and Sydney Cup entrants, however, and if he does go .to Australia it will not be till the spring. |
