OBITUARY
MR. H. D. EDWARDS
Private advice lias bene received in Wellington that Mr. H. D. Edwards, who retired last April from the, position of Controller of Saviugs Banks and Accounts, died suddenly in Paris on Boxing Day. Mr. .Jdwards" joined the Post and Telegraph Department us a cadet in the learners' gallery, Wellington, in ISUO, nnd was sent to Westport for special service at the time of the great strike in that year. Subsequently he served at Lawrence and Greymouth, and was transferred t the Chief Post Office, Wellington, in 1907. In the following year he took up duty in tho accountants' branch, where he remained until his retirement. He was appointed Controller in October, 19-5. In 1920 Mr. Edwards was appointed to go to Samoa. to open the Post Office Savings Bank and to bring postal arrangements into lino with the Now Zealand regulations. He always took a great interest in the educaional side of his profession, and was one of the first officers of the Department to qualify as a member of '.] ; Incorporated Institute of Accountants. For many years he was a vice-president of tho Wellington Accountant Students' Society, of which he was a life member, and during tho past twenty years ho had been active in tho affairs of Hataitai, having held office in nearly all the social and sports organisations of that district. He was a member of the Hataitai Masonic Lodge, and was also an Oddfellow. Two sons—Messrs., W. D. and P. D. Edwards—are employed in Wellington, and another —Mr. H. G. Edwards—is at Napier. Tho funeral took place at Versailles on 27th December. Mrs. Edwards, who was accompanying her husband, will return to New Zealand as soon as possible.
