SCARCITY OF FISH

SEEKING THE REASON

The condition of tho South Karori Stream was tho subject of some discussion at tho monthly meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society test night, when it was decided to ask tfie city engineer, Mr. G. Hart, whether sft& been taken to make certain that there was no objectionable overflow from tho septic tank into tho stream. Inquiries will also be made with a view to ascertaining the real cause- of tho scarcity of fish in' tho stream. Mr. R-. H. Nimmo called the society's attention, to statements which had appeared in the Preßs regarding the condition of the stream, and said it was a great pity that such a beautiful stream in proximity to the city should bo polluted. He understood that the Karori stream, years ago, was one of tho best streams close to Wellington and contained many fish of good quality. Anglers had found by experience that the fish were now practically eradicated. He recommended that the ranger should make a report. ' WATER ANALYSED. Dr. Anson said that the committee should try to find why the septic tank was polluting the stream, and tho secretary (Mr. Dasent) replied that the matter was being investigated. Samples of tho water had been analysed, butj had not revealed any poisonous mat-! ter. The City Engineer had informed, the society that certain things needed to be done to the tank, and it was proposed to make some alterations at an early date. Dr. Anson: "Even if the tank is leaking it should not destroy the fish. They must be using disinfectant." Mr. S. G. Nathan remarked that the committee should find out whether it was due to this fact that the fish were dying. Possibly the fish were being cleaned out by some other means. Parties of boys and other fishermen had taken a lot of fish out of the stream. ; Mr. Nimmo said-that there were plenty of fish in the stream above the septic tank, but they were not thriving. ; .
