VALUABLE WORK

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS

There was a large attendance at tho Town Hall last night at the presentation of awards to the successful candidates of the Ked Cross Society in th» examinations conducted in first aid, home nursing, etc. The Hon. W. E. Collins, M.L.C., presided.

The chairman. said that at present more than 170 schools in New Zealand had junior Ke'd Cross circles, which were doing excellent work in helping hospitals, orphanages, and homes., and in. other social welfare service. The first object of the Junior Bed Cross vras health, and every member of the organisation must promise to observe the' simple, laws of health and personal hygiene. Such training as thesa. juniors received in personal health, service to others, and true friendship to all must help to mould them, into the material of which good citizens were made, so that the Junior Ked Cross was doing good national service. A grass-land-competition had been added to th» list of Junior Red Cross competitions, the intention being to-encourage, children to take an interest in the country, and cultivate the faculty of observation. They were much indebted to Mr. A. H. Cockayne, Assistant DirectorGeneral of Agriculture, for the valuable help he had given. No fewer than 450 entries had been received from all parts of the Dominion. Dr. T. M'Kibbin, Director of Public Hygiene, Department of Health, sai<i that the subjects of hygiene, sanitation^ first aid, and home nursing were of definite value to the community—probably, of greater value than most people realised. Short addresses were also delivered by Lady Luke and Mr. W. G. Carpenter. Lady Luke was thanked for her long and valuable help to the society. A special .film lent by the Australian Society was shown. The film illustrated tho work of the Junior Ked Cross. A short programme of items by members of the junior society was then given. The programme was as follows:— "The Junior .Ked Cross Song" (Paul Mason), lan and Jim Galloway, with juniors of the Northland circle (this song was performed for the first. time in New Zealand); dance, Patricia," Beade, Wellington Kast Girls' College; recitation, Maysie Pecne, Hutt Central; violin solo, May Hymn, Terrace; dance, Jean Ingram, Scatoun; piano duel, Esther and Jean Lark; ball swinging drill, Kilbirnio juniors; dance, Ngaire Fisherj Petone West; violin solo, Dawn M'Gonagle, Sacred Heart College; recitation, Marjorie Newport, Wellington Girls' College. • Senior and junior awards and trophies were presented. The principal awards were: —Lady Jacobena Luke trophy, Wellington College House team (leader Miss Nancy . Caughley); Mrs. Louis Blundell trophy, Wellington Girls' College team (Miss Nan Berry); George Shirtcliffe tiophy, Upper Hutt team (Mrs. George Smith); the Collins trophy for home nursing, No. 1 Wellington team (Miss Dorothy Cooper).
