"DANGEROUS MEN
THIEVES SENT TO PRISON
■'Both men me of very bad character, and to our mind arc dangerous men to be about the town," said Detective-Sergeant Holmes in the Magistrate's Court to-day about Thomas Ridout, a seaman, aged 4S, and Laurence Macey, a labourer, aged 29, who pleaded guilty to stealing goods of a total value of £23, the property of John Alexander Porter and another. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said that the complainant left a suitcase in his motorcar in Courtenty place, and the suitcase was stolen from the car. Later some of the property was traced to second-hand shops where it had been sold by Macey. The balance of the property was found in the possession of Ridout., The accused were men of the criminal type, and practically lived by crime. They had been about the town for three months and had done no honest work at all. Ridout was an associate of thieves and prostitutes and was a bag-snateher. Macey was a man of violent habits, having been convicted of robbery with violence and similar offences. He was suspected of robbing drunken men. Mr. 13. Page, S.M., sentenced both men to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour.
