APPEALS TO PUBLIC
BLED ALMOST WHIT K
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 9tk December. The action of the Mayor of AVellington. in opening a public subscription list to prqvid& funds on which, to claim
the Unemployment Board's subsidy is not to bo followed by tho Mayor of Auckland. "I have no intention of calling for public subscriptions at the present time," said Mr. Baildon this morning. "The people of Auckland have responded very generously in the past to appeals to help the unemployed, and they have also responded very liberally to many other appeals of a public ami private nature which have been made upon them. In fact, it would not be going too far to suggest that those who are fortunate enough to have a position or to bo in receipt of a small income have been bled almost white in endeavouring to assist those in distressed circumstances. I know very well that tlie people o(: Auckland have the will to give, but there is a limit to what they cau do. They are now paying the usual Government and local body taxation; they havo been called upon to pay the unemployment levy, and they will contribute still further by reason of amounts found by the City Council and other local authorities for unemployment relief works which arc now being put in hand. Asking them to do more at the present juncture would in my opinion be too much."
