LYALL BAY SCHOOL

An excellent programme was presented by the pupils oi' tho Lyall Bay School at their annual concert, in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, on Friday evening. The hall was packed to the doors, parents taking a keen interest in the talent displayed by the children. The first part of the programme was given by the primer pupils in little character sketches consisting o£ "Pixieland," Primer I.; "The Toymaker's Dream," Primers 111. atid IV.: "Cats' Antics," Primer IV.; "Sir Koger do Coverley," Prima Il.a; "The Balloon Woman," Primer Il.b; "Missing," Standard I.; "The Morris Stick Dance," Primer IV.; and "Plantation Songs," Standard Ill.b. The second half of the programme was produced by the pupils in the higher j standards. "Eobin Hood," by Standard V., was of outstanding merit, the cast including Jean Sounders as Maid Marion, Ray Ward, Eobin Hood; Leslie Haywaid, Friar Tuck; Jack Hughes, Richard Lion Hart; George Pearce, Prince John: Dick Mowat, Sheriff; Lilian Tidbury, Jenny; and the merry men and maids. The Maori songs ill character by Standard Il.b were sweetly rendered, and a recitation by Kulh Stone (Standard III.). "A Story oE the Australian Bush" received a splendid hearing and applause. Other items included "The Little Dutohies," Standard Il.a; "Jenny Pluck Pears" and "Tantoli Folk Dances," Standard Ill.a; "Cherry Blossom Tinje in Japan," Standard Il.a; Court scene, "Alice in Wonderland," Standard IV.b.1 The concluding items, Spanish sonjf and ballet, "Cachna," by Standards V. ami VI., was delightful, the costumes being extremely pretty and the dancing and actions excellent. Great praise was due to the teaching staff for the splendid production. The musical portion of the programme was provided by the staff. Owing to the limited accommodation available, a second performance will be' given tliis evening.
