With a view of obtaining a discussion on the present economic situation, the Associated Chambers of Commcrco called a conference to-day of employers in all branches of industry. Mr. H. T. Merritt (Auckland), president of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce, prosided, and there were present representatives from several branches of tho Employers' Federation, the Manufacturers' Association, the New Zealand Farmers' Union, tho New Zealand Dairy Farmers' Union, the Shoopowners' Federation, the Poultry Brooders' Association, the Fruitgrowers' Federation, tho Land Development League, and tho chambers of commerce. NEED FOR ECONOMIES. The confcrcnco reached a unanimous decision that the present condition of the country's trade and industry required drastic economies to be made in the cost of production and distribution of the Dominion's products, and as an'cs- | sent^al factor in these economies a curtailment of Stato and local body expenditure. Unanimous decisions were arrived at on all matters submitted for consider-; ation, and these conclusions will be represented to the Prime Minister on his return.
