PALMERSTON RESOLUTIONS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., 9th December. The Chamber of Commerce this afternoon passed a resolution urging the Minister of Internal Affairs to make j the coupon system illegal; and recommending that, ill view of the depression (a) that with Government mortgages payable, on tho instalment principle, so long as interest is paid, further payments of instalments shall be postponed; (b) drastic economies and commercial methods in Government Departments and public bodies shall be insisted on; (c) that further railway construction shall cease and control be placed in the hands of an independent board; (d) payments for wages relief works organised by the Unemployment Board to be on a lower basis than current rates of pay; and (c) that the attention of all bodies and persons of the State should be directed to the policy of reducing production aud living costs, with consequent economies in Government, local body, and private expenditure. , Almost similar resolutions were passed unanimously by the Manawatu A. and P. Association, which also urged a reduction in salaries of Cabinet Ministers, members of Parliament, aud Government officials, and tho suspension of Arbitration Court awards.
