There is an epidemic of suicides in the Eheims district, all of an extraordinary and determined type. Jules Jumeau purchased a revolver, but the shopkeeper was suspicious and sold him blank cartridges. His attempt at suicide failing, Jumeau rushed to a, military rifle range and implored tha soldiers to use him as a target. Meeting -with a refusal, Jumeau went to the Eheims Hospital, where he swallowed a phialof ether. He still remained' alive, so he hanged himself from a bedroom window, and this time was successful. i A Kussian threw himself into a well,' but a friend rescued him. The Russian, then struck himself a blow on the head with a pick axe. He was desperately hurt, but was able to make all certain by hanging himself from •' a tree. ■ A sixteen-year-old boy, on being reprimanded by his mother, plunged * knife into his heart. :
