DUCHESS GONE

STEAMING TO AUCKLAND

The Eastbourne Borough Council's ferry steamer Duchess, negotiations for the sale o£ which were completed yesterday, has been taken over by her new owners, and is now on her way to Auckland under her own steam. Arrangements were made for the Duchess to be towed to Auckland by the Government motor ship Maui Pomare, but when the two vessels got outside the heads last night there was a fairly heavy swell running, and this put such a strain on the towing gear that it gave way. The Maui Pomare escorted the Duchess back into calm water, but as the Government ship could not afford to waste much time, as she had to keep to her itinerary, it was mutually agreed that the Duchess should be left to follow alone. She sailed from Evans Bay at 5.40 this morning, and about five houvs later was out of sight. ■
