VIOLIN AND PIANO

RECITAL AT KARORI

In a vell-cliosen and - comprehensive programme, Mr. Trevor Fisher (piano) and Mr. Richard Maunder (violin) gave a good exposition of musical technique and understanding at. the Parish Hall, Karori, last evening. The opening Sonata in G Minor (Tartini) was well played, though lacking in; strength and intensity. Some bowing and fingering imperfections slightly marred the opening movement, but. as the violinist gained confidence these faults disappeared. The next item was Handel's Sonata (No. 6) in A for violin and piano in which both players showed true musiciau]y n'nstincts. ■ Mr. Fisher's work ■• at the piaino was in good taste. "•■ "Legende" (Weiniawski) and Rondo in G Major were played by Mr. Maunder as solps, the Legende being one of the most enjoyable items; on the programme. The latter part of the piece was rendered most appealingly. ■ ' Sir. Fisher's' first, choices: were Pavane (Byrd), Allegro (Handel), Pastorale, and Tempo dißallo* (Scarlatti). The renderings though/satisfying, were somewhat lacking in feeling, this remark apply particularly to the Pavane. Other pianoforte numbers , were,, Rhapsody: in B Minor (Brahms), Andante from Sonata in B Flat Minor (Glazoiinov), and. Andante arid' Rhondo Capriccioeo (Mendelssohn), which were very enjoyable. ' The latter item was marred by excessive use of the forte pedal. _ Mr. Fisher has finished technique and displayed strength of touch in his rhythmical opening numbers. There was' nice refinement in his encore numbers— Heller's "Tarantelle" and a "Waltz" i by Levitsky. . . : :' Oji the part of both instrumentalists there was .an inclination to accelerate the tempo. On the whole, the recital was very enjoyable. ■ ■
