HUTT BEAT UNIVERSITY.

When, University commenced their first innings against Hutt on the Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday they had a score of 234 to beat. The previous Saturday they had done well at bowling and fielding and it was expected that they would reply to Hutt with batting of the same high order. But their batting was weak. The Hutt bowler, Beard, was in deadly form and the wicket evidently suited him for, bowling consistently, he took seven wickets for 42 runs, six of the wickets being clean bowled and one "played on." Thanks mainly to him, University made only 125. Hutt sent them to the wickets again, and they made 114 for_ the loss of three men. Hutt had a five-point win. Bailey and Robinson opened to the bowling of M'Girr and Beard 'at 2.10 p.m. Bailey started well with two fours, but with the score at 11 Robinson, who had scored 'only, a single, went out to Beard. Nelson, replaced him. Bailey went out shortly afterwards through, playing a ball from Beard on to his wicket, with his score at 14 and the total at 20. Aim came on, Nelson scored, a couple, and Aim was dismissed by the redoubtable Beard before he could open his account. A similar fate befell the next roan, Leys, also before he had scored. Three more runs and it was Nelson's turn to lose his wicket to Beard—five University wickets down for 25; and,all taken ,by Beard. M'Leod and Paetz were.now in. When, the-former had scored 14, mostly in singles, he went out to Judd, "played on." His was the sixth wicket and the total was 49. Things looked bright for Hutt. ■■ Then Paetz and Caldwell became, associated and by steady batting carried the score on at a comparatively good pace (although it was far from fast) until at 3.45 p.m. 100 was x-eached. Three minutes later Beard, clean bowled Caldwell when his score was 25. Macallan followed,--and after he had hit four singles; his. stumps were scattered by Beard. Here the tea adjournment was taken. On commencing; again .Paetz played M'Girr's second delivery on to his wicket. His- 43, in which were seven fours, was1 top -score of' the1 innings. Blandford and Harrison were the last two men, and carried the total up to 125 before the former was caught out. Evidence of the wonderfully accurate wic-ket-keeping was given by the small number of extras—four, and all leg byes. The innings closed at 4.30, and Hutt made the visitors follow on. Bailey went out early, but Harrison and Nelson batted well and the score was 69 when the former was caught, for 27. Leys did not last long, and Nelson, and M'Leod were the not out men when stumps were drawn at 6.20 p.m. with the total at 114 for three wickets. Nelson's 50 not out jvas the best batting performance of the day. Details are:—' . - . ■•■ -;'"::;; '!HUTT. "' "-. First Innings ...•>•' 234 * : "UNIVERSITY. First Innings.
