WEEK-END FIRES

FOUR OUTBREAKS

Shortly after 9 o'clock on Saturday night the Fire Brigade received a call from 19, Whittakcr street, where a fire had broken out in a wooden residence owned by Herbert M. Rosenberg. No one was at home at the time, and the flames had a good hold before the brigade arrived. The brigade quickly got the fire under control, and prevented the flames spreading to the house next door, No. 17, which was separated from the burning house by a brick and concrete wall. Tho house in which the outbreak occurred was occupied by Mrs. C. Reynolds, and was insured with the New Zealand Insurance Go. for £350. The contents were insured for £.330 with tho Phoenix office. Two rooms and the kitchen were badly damaged. Part of St. Paul's Schoolroom was severely damaged by fire early yesterday morning. The alarm wa» given by Sergeant Bonisch, who discovered the rear portion of the building ablaze at 3.20 a.m. The brigade prevented the firo from spreading, but it could not save the two back rooms, which were gutted. The building and contents were insured for £3500 and £150 respectively with tho State Tire office. A fire under the stage of the New Quality Theatre, Island Bay, was discoverod shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday morning. Smoke was observed pouring out of tho ventilators, and the alarm was given immediately. Tho outbreak was not serious, and when it had been extinguished it was found that some of the flooring had been damaged. Tho building was insured for £.2000 with tho British Traders and tho contents for £1000 with the Now Zealand Insurance Company. The fourth call was received at 11.34 p.m. yesterday to a wooden two-storied building of eight rooms at 320, Happy Valley road. Tho building, which was owned by Mr. Percy. R. Green and Mrs. Florence Green, was unoccupied. It was1 seriously damaged by fire, water, and cutting away. Insurance on tho building to the extent of £500 is held in the London and Lancashire office.
