UNEMPLOYED MEN
FALLING OFF AT PETONE
The application of tho Lower Hutt Borough Council to the Unemployment Board for a grant, up to £1000, to provide work for married men before Christmas, resulted in an allocation of £400, and in accordance with its resolution passed at a special meeting last Thursday, tho council will subsidise this with a sum of £200. This will provide about nine days' work for 100 men. There were last week 107 unemployed married men. who had not previously been employed by the council. Of these, 54 have replied to the council's intimation that work was available, and with 27 others who had previously had council work they were put on various council jobs this morning. A few positions are still available for those of the 107 who may not have had an opportunity to reply to the council's circular. Ten men will probably be starting with the Public Works Department this afternoon on the work of filling in the low-lying land near the Awamutu Creek, the council having made a grant of £400 to the Public Works Department, which is carrying out the work. Re-registration of the Potone unemployed, although still incomplete, discloses that a great falling-oS in their number has occurred in the last week. On the old list there were 234 names, and up till midday to-day only 130 had re-registered. The Borough Engineer, Mr. C. L. Jackson, expects that the total number will be about 150. Seventy-five men are now engaged on the Koro Koro road widening job, and five more will be taken on tomorrow morning.
