MAXIMUM. FINE IMPOSED

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, This Day. Mr. Harper, S.M., imposed the maximum fine of £5 on Robert J. Kerridge to-day on a charge of Sunday trading, the defendant having pleaded guilty to keeping the Garrison Hall open on 30tli November as a miniature golf links. The Magistrate said that the principle which distinguished the game from golf and tennis played by members of clubs or on courts run liy a corporation was that in this caso'thc game was played for private gain. Tho> defendant, before opening, should have interviewed the police, but instead he took the law into his own hands. The defendant had six days a week, which surely was sufficient to give him an adequate return.
