The retiring Australian Commis-sioner-General in the United States, Mr. Brookes, slated that both the United States and Australia were "greatly to blame for the present world depression. I can speak moro freely as a retiring official. Both Australia and tho United States have promoted a sp:rit of isolation. Australia as a result has lost valuable markets, and the United States is now feeling the pinch." Mr. Brookes also stated that lie feels that a further factor of low commodity prices lies in tho hiding away of gold in the United States and France, and that tariffs also prevented a return to prosperity.
