STEMMING THE INFLUX

MIGRANTS TURNED BACK

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received 4th December. 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Sixty-six Italian migrants who arrived by the Orient liner Orford at Sydney yesterday were not allowed to land under the instructions of the Federal Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. A. Blakeley. The whole C 6 are being sent back to Italy, and will sail by the Orama on Saturday. It is understood that sixty are booked for Brisbane, presumably en route to the canefields of Northern Queensland. The Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. J. E. Fenton, declined to comment, saying it was a matter of international significance, and he was anxious to avoid complications. One hundred Italians on the incoming steamer Otranto are also being returned. Two hundred more about to embark on the Italian motor-ship Romolo for Australian ports have been stopped by cablegram. The Australian Immigration authorities explain that the only Italian migrants now allowed into the Commonwealth are those desiring to join relatives here, or those who have been nominated by relatives.
