"A.E.K."—Joseph Arch was elected for Northwest Norfolk iv 18S5. He stood in 1880 as "an enthusiastic supporter of Mr. Gladstone," and was always a Liberal. Thomas Burt was a candidate nominated by the Labour Kepreseutatiou League, and won Morpetli iv 1574. The Liberals were ! friendly to the movement, which was designed "to obtain better representation for the producing classes," and Burt and his fellow-member, Alexander M'Donald (Stafford), supported them. Keir Hardie entered tho House iv 1532, having declared Ills intention of establishing an Independent Labour Party without Liberal ties. He said "the Liberals were all Tory well in their way," but reserved freedom of action, though offered inducements by that party to co-operato with it. Ho waa the First Independent Labour Party—a party of one.
