THE THIRD TRIAL %

WIN FOR WELLESLEY 11. The Welleslfiy U. put up an excellent performance to win tho third Sanders Cup trial, which wns sailed on the harbour last evening in a light but steady south-wester-ly breeze. The Betty, winner of the first Uvo trials, finished fourth, after a disappointing exhibition. The slarlei-s were tho Wollesley IL, Clyde. Miss Josephine, Kia Oru, Betty, and Jilono. The Betty, Wollesley, and Kin Oru Pitch carried three men, and the others fuiir each. Tho Clyde was iictunlly first over the lino nt Shelly Uay on tlio long run to Cuiomaijilel, but the Betty yut. to windwsml of her mid drew ahead. All .set spinnakers. With n short distance covered the Clyde had worked to windward of the Betty, which was losing tho wind as a result. The Wcllesloy was, in the meanlimn, sailing well to leeward of the t\vo leaders, and gradually she drew away ill tho lead: During tlio greater part of the remainder of the run, Crawford, in the Clyde, had the Betty under her lee, ami finally the Clyde opened up a substantial break on her rival. The Betty got a nice breeze as they approached the hulk, which was rounded first by the Welleslcy, with the others at the following intervals:—Clyde, 20see; Betty, 28see; Kia Ora, 47sec; Miss Josephine, lmin 23sec; Idono, lmin 25see. Tho Betty and Idono were the only boats which did not set leaders for the' beat up to Shelly Bay, und the former soon began to fall back. She appeared lifeless until about half the journey had been covered', but it was then too late to make up the leeway, and in the concluding stages she was actually losing ground. The Wellesley, on goins? about after rounding tlio hulk, made a long board which took her well inside the entrance to .Evans Bay, and once she made tlio Shelly Bay buoy her success was assured. Only 2:isec behind came the Clyde, and there was considerable excitement as the two boats sot oli' on the broad lead to the llnishing line off Point Jcrningham under spinnakers. The Wolleslcy _move -than held, her-own, and won convincingly. ■ The Betty was third round the Shelly Bay buoy, being- closely followed by. t.li'e Kia Ora, with Lho Aliss'Josephine fifth and the Idono sixth.
