Three collieries, one of which was working only half its capacity, was the extent of the coalmining in Fifeshire to-day. Communists persuaded 500 of the 1500 employees at Lewis Merthyr mine at Treechafod not to descend the shaft. Six hundred struck at the Tareni colliery in Swansea "Valley as a protest against the terms offered by the South Wales Miners' Federation settlement, which most of the districts accepted. The strike is expected to cease tomorrow. All tne North Wales pits have resumed. Three thousand men at the Easington colliery arc idle owing to a hitch in the new agreement. ,An early settlement is expected. Mr. Shinwell, Secretary of Mines, conferred with the representatives of the employers and employees in order to explore plans for a permanent settlement in South Wales and a temporary one in Scotland. He declares himself as being optimistic in regard to this.
